I try very hard to keep my personal life very separate and private from what I do covering sports or hanging out with friends cuz it’s frankly no one’s business. However, this is one case where it’s appropriate to share a personal story that happened just this past summer. I’d been seeing a guy who works security for various events in SLC. This particular time he was working a small country concert and asked me if I would come hangout for a bit and then go get dinner. As I walked up he told me about one of the concert goers calling him the N-Word just because he was doing his job correctly and it was a little inconvenient for the concert goer. A little later in the night my date told me that guy walked past us leaving the concert and my response was “good thing you waited to say something until he was long gone because words would have been exchanged”. The irony of it all? My date literally saved a man- a white man’s life by chasing him down and taking away his car keys because he was clearly too intoxicated to drive and called him and his crying girlfriend an Uber rather than having him arrested for public intoxication. I watched him do it shortly after being so horribly degraded by a different white man earlier. I could not have admired his ability to not let one negative person affect the job and people he still needed to serve any more that night if I tried. We’ve come a long way, but there are still those who think that mindset is appropriate and ok. It’s not. Stay kind and stay fighting for what’s right. ✊🏼#MartinLutherKingJrDay
