Two contrasting themes in The Grapes of Wrath are selfishness and altruism. Selfishness is shown by landowners and businessman who push tenant farmers off the land for the money, not thinking of the effects it will have on them. Altruism is shown by the kind acts that people do for eachother, such as Rose of Sharon attempting to save that man at the end of the novel, or when the lady at the roadside restaurant gave the kids two nickel candies for two cents.
