I used to think that staying out of conflict was the best way to deal with it. I was always so afraid of offending someone. But ultimately it can be much more offensive to not speak up. It can be selfish. While we know how we each feel inside, there is a risk that much more can be read into silence, than can be mistakenly interpreted from speaking up. We all have causes that we can be advocates for. And even more to the point often when we speak up we find we are not alone. We connect with others, we find the similarities, not the differences. We need to ask questions and we need to learn about other people. It can be easy to fall into thinking you know about someone just from looking at them, but you never really know unless you talk to them. There’s nothing to be gained from silence, and there’s everything to be gained from dialogue. There is so much power to heal with words. While one thing humans all share is suffering, but we also all share love. .
